What this test measures
The bank leans towards investing and economics because that is where the expensive misunderstandings live. Budgeting questions are the most answerable from everyday experience; the credit items catch more people out than they expect.
| Category | Questions in bank | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Investing | 11 | Compound growth, diversification, fee drag, and the difference between price and value. |
| Economics | 8 | Inflation, real versus nominal returns, interest rates, and how they interact. |
| Budgeting | 7 | Cash-flow planning, emergency funds, and the arithmetic of everyday spending. |
| Credit | 4 | How scores are built, what debt actually costs, and which repayments to prioritise. |
The 30 questions in the bank are weighted towards the categories above; each session draws 25 of them, so no two attempts present the same paper.
A real question from this test
This item is taken directly from the bank, not written for illustration.
If inflation is 3% and your savings earn 1%, your real return is:
- +4%
- +2%
- −2%
- 0%
Show the answer
−2%. Real return is roughly the nominal rate minus inflation, so 1% minus 3% leaves you 2% poorer in purchasing power each year even though the balance on the statement went up. This is the single most consequential idea on the test and the one most often missed.
How your score is calculated
Scoring runs on the proportion you answer correctly, put through a quadratic curve so that accuracy at the top of the range is worth more than accuracy at the bottom. The result is mapped onto the familiar scale where 100 is the population midpoint and 15 points is one standard deviation, then reported with a percentile and a per-category breakdown. Questions left unanswered when the timer expires count as incorrect.
The investing and economics categories correlate strongly with each other and weakly with budgeting. Plenty of people run a disciplined household budget while holding real misconceptions about how their pension is growing, and the category bars are built to surface exactly that split.
How to read your result
Scores land in one of seven bands. The population percentages describe the standard distribution these bands are modelled on, not the people who have taken this particular test.
| Score | Band | Share of population |
|---|---|---|
| 145 and above | Highly Gifted | ~0.1% |
| 130 – 144 | Gifted | ~2% |
| 115 – 129 | Superior | ~14% |
| 100 – 114 | Above Average | ~34% |
| 85 – 99 | Average | ~34% |
| 70 – 84 | Low Average | ~14% |
| Below 70 | Below Average | ~2% |
A single number is a summary, and the category bars underneath it carry most of the useful information. Two people can reach the same total by very different routes. If you want to see where your score sits precisely, the IQ percentile chart converts any score on this scale into a rank.
Frequently asked questions
Is this financial advice?
No. It is an educational quiz about widely accepted financial concepts. Nothing in the questions, the answers, or the result is a recommendation about what you should do with your money, and none of it accounts for your circumstances.
What counts as financial literacy?
The standard research definition covers four ideas: compound interest, inflation, risk diversification, and the relationship between interest rates and bond prices. International surveys consistently find that fewer than half of adults answer all of the core questions correctly. This test covers those four and extends into budgeting and credit.
Why does investing get the most questions?
Eleven of the 30 bank items are investing questions because that is the area where a misunderstanding compounds. Getting compound interest wrong for thirty years costs meaningfully more than misjudging a weekly grocery budget.
Does a high score mean I am good with money?
It means you understand the concepts. Behaviour is a separate matter, and the gap between knowing that high-interest debt should be cleared first and actually clearing it is where most financial damage happens.
