What this test measures

Trait inventories work by asking you to rate yourself and then scoring the pattern. This is a knowledge test, so every question has a right answer drawn from the research literature. If you want your own trait profile, a validated Big Five inventory is the tool for that, and this test is the one that tells you how well you would read the results.

CategoryQuestions in bankWhat it covers
Traits9The Big Five dimensions, what each one predicts, and the evidence behind them.
Theory9Jung, Freud, Eysenck, and the lineage from psychodynamic ideas to modern trait models.
Assessment6How instruments are validated, what reliability means, and why some popular tools fail on it.
Behaviour6Situational versus dispositional explanation, and how traits show up in real conduct.

The 30 questions in the bank are weighted towards the categories above; each session draws 25 of them, so no two attempts present the same paper.

A real question from this test

This item is taken directly from the bank, not written for illustration.

In the Big Five model, which trait best predicts job performance across occupations?

  1. Extraversion
  2. Openness
  3. Conscientiousness
  4. Agreeableness
Show the answer

Conscientiousness. It is the one Big Five trait that predicts performance across essentially every job family studied, which is why it appears in so much selection research. Extraversion predicts well in sales and management specifically, and openness tracks training performance and creative work rather than general job outcomes.

How your score is calculated

Scoring runs on the proportion you answer correctly, put through a quadratic curve so that accuracy at the top of the range is worth more than accuracy at the bottom. The result is mapped onto the familiar scale where 100 is the population midpoint and 15 points is one standard deviation, then reported with a percentile and a per-category breakdown. Questions left unanswered when the timer expires count as incorrect.

Theory and assessment are the categories that separate people who have read popular articles from people who have read the research. Knowing the Big Five names is common; knowing why the MBTI's test-retest reliability is a problem is not.

How to read your result

Scores land in one of seven bands. The population percentages describe the standard distribution these bands are modelled on, not the people who have taken this particular test.

ScoreBandShare of population
145 and aboveHighly Gifted~0.1%
130 – 144Gifted~2%
115 – 129Superior~14%
100 – 114Above Average~34%
85 – 99Average~34%
70 – 84Low Average~14%
Below 70Below Average~2%

A single number is a summary, and the category bars underneath it carry most of the useful information. Two people can reach the same total by very different routes. If you want to see where your score sits precisely, the IQ percentile chart converts any score on this scale into a rank.

Frequently asked questions

Will this tell me my personality type?

No, and that is deliberate. It is a knowledge quiz about the field. For your own trait scores, look for a validated Big Five or IPIP inventory, which asks you to rate statements about yourself rather than answer questions with correct answers.

Is the MBTI scientifically valid?

It is popular and its psychometrics are weak. The main problems are test-retest reliability, with a substantial share of people getting a different type weeks later, and the forced binary split of traits that are actually continuous. The Big Five is the model academic psychology uses, because it was derived from data rather than theory.

What are the Big Five traits?

Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. They emerged from statistical analysis of the words languages use to describe people, and they replicate across cultures more consistently than any competing model.

Do I need a psychology background to score well?

It helps but it is not required. Roughly half the bank covers material that appears in introductory courses and general science writing. The theory and assessment items are where formal study shows.
